Scotiabank presents a cheque for $1,000,000 to SickKids

On January 21, 2011, Scotiabank announced a $1-million gift to SickKids to help fund the International Patient Program (IPP). The gift, which has been spread out over 10 years, helps coordinate care and service to patients coming to the Hospital from around the world.
Scotiabank is especially committed to enriching the communities where its customers live and work. Because the bank has branches in Latin America and the Caribbean, its gift will focus on children in this region.
Already, the donation is being put to good use. Two children who suffer from profound hearing loss, including two-year-old Hannah from Trinidad, have been able to travel to SickKids for cochlear implants.
“Scotiabank has a presence all over the world, and especially in the Caribbean and Latin America,” says Kamla Sharma, Director of the IPP at SickKids. “Scotiabank excels at good corporate stewardship by mobilizing their staff to improve the lives of children in global communities they serve.”
In addition to supporting the care of children who will come to Toronto for treatment, the donation will also fund other IPP priorities that impact children’s lives. “Scotiabank’s gift has a profound impact on families travelling from abroad who do not have the resources to support their child’s highly specialized treatment at SickKids,” says Sharma.
The gift was announced in conjunction with Scotiabank’s new Bright Future program, which will increase its support of international paediatric health-care initiatives.
The International Patient Program has been helping children and their families from around the world to facilitate access to specialized care and treatment at SickKids for more than 10 years. The program does not receive government funding and, instead, relies on support from generous gifts and donations.
Thank you Scotiabank for your generous gift, which will bring SickKids closer to achieving its vision, Healthier Children. A Better World.
