Our Kids - Meet Christopher
When Christopher was diagnosed with cancer, his parents asked if they should just take him home because they thought nothing more could be done.
Christopher, Neuroblastoma
Christopher was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an often deadly cancer that develops in the adrenal glands, above the kidneys, and often spreads to other organs. It started with constant complaints of back pain that resulted in him becoming almost immobile. Christopher had difficulty walking as a result of the pain. When Christopher was first diagnosed he was already in stage four of five possible stages of spreading. His parents were deeply concerned. SickKids medical professionals told them were going to do everything they could to give him a better outcome.
Christopher was very adaptable with what he endured - multiple chemotherapy sessions, surgeries, courses of radiation and a stem cell transplant. After Christopher finished his treatments they thought that he had relapsed and were prepared to fight the battle all over again. They had numerous tests done which all showed spots and shadows indicating a possible return of the cancer.
Thankfully, tests revealed that the cancer hadn't returned and it was just bruising that was causing potential concern - Christopher's family was very relieved.
Christopher's parents are vigilant in ensuring that he stays healthy. They have to watch for potential infectious situations - a dose of chicken pox could be critical to Christopher's state of health.
Every few months Christopher has to come back to SickKids. This is now part of his routine. Even his baby brother Rory is used to going to the hospital.
