Our Kids - Meet Claire

Claire

Claire, Nystagmus

It’s hard not to spot Claire when she is sporting her trademark pink-rimmed glasses. But those glasses come with a history of many visits to The Hospital for Sick Children.

Claire first came to the SickKids Ophthalmology Department at four months old to undergo a few eye exams. Her Ophthalmologist discovered Claire was far-sighted, cross-eyed and suffered from something called nystagmus, which means a jittery movement of the eyes.

The diagnosis of nystagmus worried her doctors because sometimes it can be a symptom of a brain tumour. Much to the relief of Claire’s parents and the staff at SickKids, an MRI ruled out a brain tumour.

Recently, Claire underwent an operation at the Hospital to correct her crossed-eyes and nystagmus. She will continue to visit the Ophthalmology clinic at SickKids for regular check ups.

Did you know?

The staff in the Ophthalmology Department sees approximately 14,000 patient visits per year, plus an additional 5,000 to 6,000 diagnostic visits per year.
