Our Kids - Meet Jack
Jack wants to cure the children at SickKids. Armed with a lemonade stand and loads of determination, five-year-old Jack has raised more than $60,000 for the hospital in two years.
Jack, Epilepsy
Jack has a personal connection to SickKids; he's a patient. He started having seizures before the age of one. Even with medication, his seizures persisted and doctors diagnosed Jack with intractable epilepsy, which means his seizures continued despite maximum medical treatment.
Jack has undergone lots of tests at SickKids to determine the next steps in his treatment. In 2007, his doctors decided to put him on the ketogenic diet - high in fats, low in carbohydrates. With the combination of his diet and medication four times a day, his seizures have decreased by 90 per cent. Jack continues to be evaluated for epilepsy surgery.
As a young philanthropist with Jack's Lemonade Stand (www.jackslemonade.com), Jack is truly making a difference for other children with epilepsy. The proceeds from his lemonade stand go towards various projects within the epilepsy program at SickKids.
Jack and his family hope that one day a cure for epilepsy is found.
Jack and approximately 1,200 other patients seek treatment for epilepsy each year at SickKids. Thanks to research, doctors have been able to more accurately pinpoint the precise area in the brain where seizures originate. This accuracy helps minimize the amount of invasive surgery a child must endure. SickKids also offers many additional leading-edge treatments for children with epilepsy.
Last year Jack won the Spirit Award at the Kids Believe in SickKids award gala. Click on the video to see why.
