Joey, Ewing’s sarcoma
Joey has an infectious spirit and a rare gift for making others feel at ease. These qualities came in handy when Joey found himself on the cancer ward at The Hospital for Sick Children.
During the summer of 2009, Joey began to feel significant pain in his upper right arm. Doctors initially believed it was the result of a sports injury but a fever followed by some blood work confirmed cancer. Ewing’s sarcoma, Joey’s type of cancer, is a rare childhood bone cancer that’s generally found in young adults.
While most of his classmates began Grade 2, Joey endured countless tests, several rounds of chemotherapy treatment and a 16-hour surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children. He experienced many side effects from his medications, which included losing 25 pounds in the matter of a few months.
Joey has remained brave throughout his treatment. He completed his chemotherapy and now visits SickKids for regular check ups.
Joey has decided that it’s his mission to tell his story. He missed almost a year of school while being treated but joined his friends back in class this fall. He has already agreed to give a talk to his Grade 3 class and school about his journey at SickKids.

Each year, SickKids sees approximately 320 new cancer patients, representing more than 25 per cent of all new cases of paediatric cancer in Canada and 60 per cent of all cases in Ontario.
