Our Kids - Meet Zachary

At 19 months old, doctors diagnosed Zachary with a kidney disease called nephrotic syndrome. He has had to take almost 10 pills and various liquid medications each day for as long as he can remember. He also visited the clinics at SickKids regularly. While managing his condition, Zachary stayed extremely active and even played Double A Hockey.

Zachary, Nephrotic Syndrome

In 2008, everything changed. His condition drastically worsened. He spent eight months in hospital, which halted his daily routines and especially affected his schooling. Once a gifted student, Zachary missed a lot of school and struggled to keep up with his studies.

In early 2008, he suffered kidney failure, required dialysis and months later his kidneys needed to be removed. Thankfully, his father was a match as a kidney donor and Zachary underwent a kidney transplant in the summer of 2009.

Zachary’s underlying condition continues to cause him problems. He has had to undergo more treatments at SickKids several times each week since the transplant.

Once dreaming of becoming a sports agent in Los Angeles, California, Zachary just dreams of getting better and getting back to his old life. He wants to play hockey again and spend time with his friends. Thanks to SickKids, Zachary remains hopeful that this can one day become true.
