Sustainability

Healthier Children. A Better World.™ extends beyond the work done at SickKids to encompass all of its endeavours. The SickKids Centre for Research and Learning is no exception.

Designed to achieve LEED® Gold Certification, the Centre will set the standard for energy efficiency and sustainable infrastructure in Toronto’s Discovery District.

LEED® Gold Certification promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:

  • Sustainable site development
  • Water efficiency
  • Energy efficiency
  • Materials selection
  • Indoor environmental quality

At the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning, sustainable measures include:

  • Access to natural light for 90 per cent of the space
  • Innovation in design including using recycled content, low-emitting materials and local resources in construction
  • Reducing light pollution to help preserve the night sky and the nocturnal environment
  • Optimizing energy use
  • Water use reduction measures and innovative wastewater technologies
  • Water efficient landscaping
  • Storm water management
  • Erosion and sedimentation control
  • Green housekeeping
  • Green educational programs
  • Recycling program
  • Secure bicycle parking
