Build a Legacy - Donor Advised Funds

SickKids Charitable Giving Fund

Donor Advised Fund benefits - at a glance

A donor advised fund is similar to creating your own ‘private foundation' but without the costs and administrative burdens. A portion of the annual disbursement from the fund will support SickKids while the remaining amount can be directed to your other favourite Canadian charities.

This is a unique opportunity for donors at a minimum commitment of $50,000 ($10,000 x 5 years) to retain control, flexibility and involvement with their giving, while ensuring a legacy of philanthropy long into the future. When you establish your fund, you will receive a tax receipt for your initial donation as well as all subsequent contributions. If you use appreciated securities to establish your fund, you will also be exempt from paying capital gains tax.

A fund can be established in three easy steps:

Give: Make a contribution and name your fund (e.g. The Smith Family Fund).

Grow: SickKids Foundation's professional asset managers invest the fund and provide an annual statement of earned income available to grant.

Grant: Recommend grants to SickKids Foundation and your other favourite Canadian charities.

Robert and Naomi's Story:

Recently, Robert and Naomi Shapero wanted to give back to the community, but they wanted to do something more permanent than making annual donations to various charities.

"We were looking for a way to support our favourite charities more strategically and also wanted to find a way to introduce our children to philanthropy and instill the importance of giving back," says Robert.

By establishing the Robert and Naomi Shapero Family Donor Advised Fund, the family can make decisions together about what charities they would like to support without the associated costs and cumbersome administrative requirements of a private family foundation.

While Robert and Naomi's four children are still quite young, they hope to include them in future granting decisions.

Robert sees additional value in the permanence of a donor advised fund: "It is fulfilling to know that our children and grandchildren will be able to carry on this legacy of giving long after we are gone."
