Build a Legacy - Gifts from U.S. Donors
Gift and Estate Planning
Are you a U.S. individual or corporate taxpayer interested in supporting our vision of imagining every child healthy? Perhaps you reside in the U.S. for the winter months or for your retirement years. You can still help SickKids by building a legacy to support a vision of improving children's health worldwide.
U.S. federal laws generally allow an income tax deduction for gifts only to qualified U.S. charities. Direct contributions from U.S. resident donors to Canadian charities, such as SickKids, are generally not tax deductible.
Friends of The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Inc. (Friends) is a U.S. charity that accepts gifts from U.S.-based individual or corporate donors who wish to support SickKids. Friends is separate from SickKids Foundation with its own board of directors. While retaining control over the use of gifts, the Friends board considers wishes of donors regarding the suggested use of their contributions.
In addition to cash and appreciated stocks or real property, U.S. donors may also make planned gifts via Friends. Bequests, charitable remainder trusts, such as charitable remainder annuity trust (CRAT) and the charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) are examples of deferred gifts. A charitable lead trust is another form of charitable giving in the U.S., which is a reverse of deferred giving - it is a gift you get back after the charity has benefited from income interest from the property.
Friends can help U.S. based donors choose the best donation vehicle and explore the significant income and estate tax advantages of making cash or planned gifts to SickKids. As always, seeking legal and tax counsel to review your situation is advisable before making significant gifts.
