Calling SickKids Home for the Holidays
Highlighting the annual holiday activities at the Hospital for patients and their families.
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, imagine calling SickKids home for the holidays. This year more than 250 families will see their holiday traditions relinquished to tests, treatments, pokes and procedures, waking up in hospital when others are celebrating with family and friends. For some, this has become their tradition and it is up to the SickKids Child Life Department to bring a little laughter into their lives at this time of year.

A transformational gift of $30 million, believed to be the single largest private gift to paediatric cancer in North America, was announced this morning by Mary Jo Haddad, President and CEO of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). The gift will establish the Garron Family Cancer Centre and allow SickKids to help more children survive their cancer diagnosis.

New Kid on the Block
SickKids announces the most ambitious capital redevelopment plan in its 135-year history
Toronto - The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) today announced the details of the $400 million, 21-storey, 750,000 square foot Research & Learning Tower to be built at the corner of Bay and Elm Streets; bringing together the 2,000 scientists and staff of SickKids Research Institute. The Tower is slated to be completed by 2013. Designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. with HDR Inc., the world-class facility will achieve LEED® Gold Certification - setting the standard for energy efficiency and sustainable infrastructure in Toronto’s Discovery District. The construction contract to build the Tower was awarded to Ellis Don Corporation.

At final tally, the 24th Annual SickKids Radiothon raised $2,329,021.

Family-centred Sears Cancer Clinic offers SickKids patients and families a new place to call their own
New clinic features vibrant spaces and allows for improved patient flow
TORONTO - Children dealing with cancer and serious blood diseases spend a great deal of their young lives visiting the hospital. Ten-year-old Tobin Haas knows this all too well. When he was only two years old he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It was treated but then grew back; last summer a routine MRI revealed Tobin had relapsed again and the cancer had spread to Tobin’s spine. Tobin has endured surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and countless hospital visits.

Ready. Set. Solve! Family Day Race for SickKids takes over the PATH
Calling all teams to register for a day of
PATH, Toronto’s Downtown Walkway, will come alive with teams of families and friends on February 15 for the inaugural Family Day Race for SickKids. Teams will maneuver their way through sections of the 27-kilometre underground walkway during a two-hour race to solve puzzles and brain-teasers to raise money in support of SickKids Foundation.

The James Fund featured on W-Five, CTV News
On Saturday, March 21, CTV's national current affairs program, W-Five, aired an inspiring story about The James Fund and the groundbreaking work in neuroblastoma research at SickKids Research Institute.
The story focuses on the late James Birrell (8), his courageous battle with neuroblastoma, and his family's philanthropic efforts which led to the creation of The James Fund and the launch of The James Birrell Laboratories at Dr. David Kaplan's lab at the Research Institute. SickKids interviews include Dr. Kaplan, Dr. Sylvain Baruchel, and a neuroblastoma patient currently undergoing treatment.

BMO Establishes $2 Million Chair at SickKids to Further Congenital Heart Disease Research
SickKids Foundation and the University of Toronto have announced a $2 million dollar gift from BMO Financial Group, establishing the BMO Financial Group Chair in Cardiology. World-renowned SickKids clinician and researcher, and University of Toronto Professor in Paediatrics, Dr. Andrew Redington has been named the inaugural Chair holder.

Arthur and Sonia Labatt make landmark $30 million donation to SickKids
SickKids Foundation today announced the largest gift in the history of The Hospital for Sick Children and the largest philanthropic investment in children’s cardiac medicine and research in North America.
Arthur and Sonia Labatt pledged an historic $30 million to SickKids with $25 million establishing The Labatt Family Heart Centre and a $5 million endowment that furthers their support of the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre.
