Patients with severe epilepsy benefit from attending a special classroom at SickKids that helps them transition into a regular school environment. SickKids treats about 1,200 children a year with epilepsy.

Since 1979, the Herbie Fund has helped close to 700 children from more than 100 developing countries receive life-saving surgery at SickKids. SickKids has treated 13 children so far this year alone from countries including Iraq, Guyana and Ethiopia.

Your donations make a profound difference in improving the health and well-being of children. With your help, last year, the Foundation provided $57.9 million to SickKids to support priorities in care, research and learning. In October 2011 alone, $7,146,749 was granted to the Hospital to bring us one step closer to reaching our vision: Healthier Children. A Better World.

Here are some of the projects this funding supported:

Research

  • $64,471 to support research into Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a complex genetic disorder that affects many parts of the body, including the eyes.
  • $70,936 to support Dr. Sergio Grinstein’s research into the human immune system.

Learning

  • $27,826 to support the classroom at SickKids for children with epilepsy.
  • $10,000 to provide professional development to staff in the Neonatal Program.
