A humanitarian brings peace to the most chaotic of situations, hope to the most hopeless and kindness to the most difficult. A humanitarian touches the lives of others and strives, above all, to bring them happiness.

It's a definition that accurately describes the newest Humanitarian Award recipients at SickKids.

Dr. Michael Weinstein, a paediatrician who specializes in the treatment of children with complex, rare conditions, is among them. His 17-year legacy of excellence, compassion and care at SickKids, and the countless lives he has touched, are just some of the many reasons why he was selected to receive the The Claus Wirsig Humanitarian Award.

Dr. Weinstein credits his compassionate approach to his father, Lionel Weinstein, who was also a SickKids doctor. Among his first memories was accompanying his dad on rounds at the hospital. "My father would be proud of this award," he says.

But the true extent of Dr. Weinstein's influence is felt best when described by the people whose life he has so profoundly touched. Many families came forward to nominate him for the award.

"Dr. Weinstein made Jaida feel so special," says her mother, Helen, in her nomination letter.

Thank you Dr. Weinstein. And thank you to all of this year's Humanitarian Award recipients, who provide the best possible care to patients and families each and every day. You are everyday heroes at SickKids.
