Fairchild Radio Listeners Raise Over $109,000 for SickKids

The fifth annual Fairchild Radiothon was held on Thursday, October 27 and raised more than $109,000 for SickKids Foundation.

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., 17 families and SickKids staff from the Chinese community shared their inspirational stories in an effort to raise funds for The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). The event was broadcast live all day from the Atrium at SickKids.

“We are thrilled by the efforts of this community, who really came together to support SickKids,” said Rosalie McGovern, Vice President, Direct Marketing at SickKids Foundation. “We are so thankful for everyone’s contributions - the support of the staff and volunteers from AM 1430 and FM 88.9, the families who courageously shared their stories, and of course the community members – who helped make this event a great success!”

To close this year’s Fairchild Radiothon, SickKids patient, Dorothy Wong, 4 and family shared Dorothy’s story. At two weeks old, Dorothy’s parents were told that Dorothy had two congenital heart defects and she would eventually require open-heart surgery to survive. Dorothy was taken to SickKids for the procedure. The surgery was successful, and Dorothy was able to go home 2 ½ weeks later.

Funds raised during the 11-hour event are used to fund child health research, and contribute to the medical outreach program and the purchase of medical equipment. To date, the event has now raised more than $459,000 for SickKids, Canada’s most research intensive hospital.
