Humanitarian awards honour SickKids best caregivers

The most selfless of staff, volunteers and students were celebrated at the annual Humanitarian Awards at SickKids Wednesday night. The honorees exemplify the qualities of humanitarianism, while providing the best possible care to patients and families each and every day. The recipients were nominated by their colleagues or by families who have been touched by their dedicated, care and compassion. The awards are sponsored by SickKids Foundation. We congratulate the recipients and nominees who strive to help children fulfill their hopes and dreams. You are our everyday heroes.

Student Humanitarian Award:

SickKids Foundation originally created the Humanitarian Awards program to recognize and honour students at SickKids who have consistently demonstrated compassion and humanitarianism in providing care to children and their families. The Student Awards remain at the heart of the program.

The awards are open to any student who has trained full- or part-time at SickKids for a minimum period of one semester during the year ending December 31, 2010. The award comes with $1,000, along with a framed award.

Volunteer Humanitarian Award:

Created in 2001 to commemorate the International Year of the Volunteer, this award recognizes and honours volunteers who consistently demonstrate the qualities of compassion and humanitarianism while providing assistance to patients and families at SickKids. This award honours SickKids volunteers from Volunteer Resources and the Women’s Auxiliary Ms. Julie Glazier, volunteer, Women’s Auxiliary - The Reading Room

Family-Centred Care Advisory Council Award:

Conceived by the Family-Centred Care Advisory Council in celebration of the 1994 International Year of the Family, this award recognizes and honours a staff person, employee or team at SickKids who provides care to patients in a manner that demonstrates outstanding commitment to the philosophy of family-centered care while providing direct care to patients. Family-centered care recognizes that the family is the primary caregiver and decision-maker in a child's life. Recipients are nominated by a family.

Robert Salter Humanitarian Award:

Named for Dr. Robert B. Salter at the 1999 Humanitarian Awards ceremony, in honour of his lifetime of humanitarianism, this award recognizes and honours medical health professionals or support staff at SickKids who have consistently demonstrated qualities of compassion and humanitarianism in providing care to patients and their families.

Claus Wirsig Humanitarian Award:

The Claus Wirsig Humanitarian Award is given to an individual who qualifies for the Robert Salter Award and is recognized for an ability to model and communicate the values and qualities of compassion and humanitarianism. Recipients are engaged in peer to peer education and may have a formal or informal teaching role with students.
