| INSIDE SICKKIDS: |
| Hollywood comes to SickKids |
Imagine taking the excitement and wonderment of going to the movies away from a child. Thanks to a generous gift to renovate the auditorium at SickKids into a new state-of-the-art movie theatre, patients will never have to experience that feeling. |
| SickKids is a world leader in children’s health, and donations of this nature allow us to fund family-centred care initiatives like The Hollywood at SickKids. This theatre is a welcome diversion for families who unfortunately need to call SickKids home for a length of time and will go a long way to help minimize the negative impact of illness and hospitalization for patients and their families. Use of the auditorium as a movie theatre will not supersede the educational activities that the room was previously used for. When the theatre is not being used to show films, it will be used to enhance educational capabilities through state-of-the-art broadcast and telemedicine equipment. This theatre experience can be enjoyed by everyone at SickKids! |

| FOCUS ON PHILANTHROPY: |
| SickKids Foundation is 35 years young! |
| This year marks the 35th anniversary of SickKids Foundation, established in 1972 to inspire the community to invest in children’s health and ensure that every child receives the best possible care. To date, your donations have raised over $500 million for The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and over $60 million to researchers across Canada. |
| Here is a snapshot of the impact your donations have made over the past 35 years: |
1979: A team led by Dr. A. Charles Bryan invented the high frequency oscillator, now used worldwide to gently "shake" oxygen into the lungs of infants and children with severe lung disease sparing many from undergoing lung bypass procedures.
1989: Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui led a team that discovered the gene which, when defective, is responsible for cystic fibrosis.
2001: Researchers at SickKids discovered that infant heart transplants can be performed safely and successfully despite major blood type incompatibility between the donor and recipient. |
| You and your generosity have inspired us to do more. Our goal is to raise $500 million by 2011, the largest fundraising goal of any hospital in Canada. We hope you will help us reach our goal (link to donate) |

| UNIQUE WAYS TO GIVE: |
| Children’s Circle of Care – A united front on children’s health |
| A circle represents unity, imagine being a part of a group who unites to ensure the health of our children; these individuals form the Children’s Circle of Care (CCC), an important group that represents 22 prominent children’s hospital’s across North America of which SickKids is one. |
| CCC was formed to support children’s hospitals that embrace a 360-degree perspective of children’s health – their physical and mental well-being, not just clinical care. These individuals challenge others to make children’s health a top priority and support children’s hospitals in their community with annual gifts of $10,000 or more. |
| Each year, a North American Leadership Conference gives CCC members the opportunity to learn and be inspired by the great strides taking place at children’s hospitals nation wide. This year’s conference was hosted in Boston, Massachusetts and included many inspirational speakers including Children’s Hospital Boston’s Dr. James E. Lock who performed the world’s first successful fetal-heart surgery. The conference concluded with a special performance by Elton John, an experience that will not be forgotten. |
| You can take your place in the circle by emailing us at ccc.info@sickkidsfoundation.com or calling 416 813 8602. |

| UNIQUE WAYS TO GIVE: |
| Wear your belief |
| Did you know that Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of leukemia affecting young children? Did you also know that SickKids is the only children’s hospital in Ontario that provides a full range of treatments for children requiring the most complex cancer treatments, including ALL? |
| Now meet Ben, a SickKids patient with ALL. Ben inspired the Believe tag, an inspirational sterling silver necklace with our “Believe” message that can be found on www.shopsickkids.com. |
| Here is Ben’s story: |
| At four and a half years old, SickKids diagnosed Ben with ALL, which affects the white blood cells. After months of fighting, Ben received a bone marrow transplant that saved his life. Ben, now 7, listens to U2, loves skateboarding, soccer and shredding the steepest hills on his snowboard. He’s a bit of a joker at heart, but no one makes him laugh harder than his older brother, Max. |
| He vows to never eat yogurt again – the one food that helped mask the taste of countless spoonfuls of medicine during the year-long treatment at Sick Kids. |
| After his Auntie and Grampa mentioned that cancer was their zodiac sign, Ben quickly chimed in, “Yeah, I used to have cancer but not anymore.” |
| To purchase the necklace mentioned in this story visit www.shopsickkids.com. By wearing it, you believe in Ben, you believe in SickKids. |
