Our Kids - Meet Jared
Jared will be hearing Chanukah music for the first time this year. Born 13 weeks prematurely in June 2009, the now two-and-a-half-year-old recently received a cochlear implant at SickKids to help him hear for the first time in his life. His parents, Beth and Darron, are excited to watch his reaction.
Profound hearing loss is not the only the challenge the young boy has faced. Born weighing only two pounds, six ounces, Jared lived at SickKids for nearly a year – being tested and treated for a myriad of complications caused by his premature delivery. He had underdeveloped lungs, gastrointestinal issues, suffered kidney and liver failure and was in the SickKids Critical Care Unit on ventilator breathing support.
Prior to his first Chanukah two years ago, he had just been placed on the liver transplant list. His parents had not yet been able to hold him without the assistance of an extensive medical team.
Although he received a liver transplant in January 2010 and was able to spend last year’s Chanukah at home, the holidays came to a close with Jared returning to SickKids once more with a cough. This visit turned into a month-long hospital stay for a respiratory virus.
Today, having been infection-free since April, Beth and Darron look forward to a simple, joyous holiday celebration surrounded by family and friends – and beautiful songs about the Festival of Lights.
“We could not have survived without the tremendous amount of devotion and support given to our family by Jared’s core nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, respiratory therapists and social workers. These people have become our extended family,” said Beth.
