Our Kids - Meet Jessica

Jessica, 16, diaphragmatic hernia and juvenile scoliosis

Jessica, 16, diaphragmatic hernia and juvenile scoliosis

This summer Jessica, 16, went for her final clinic appointment at SickKids. It was bittersweet. Although she was happy to be ending treatment, she also felt a little sad about leaving so many friends behind.

Jessica has relied on SickKids since the day she was born. She was brought to the Hospital at birth with a life-threatening diaphragmatic hernia. At one point, her parents were told she had a 29 per cent chance of survival. SickKids doctors performed emergency corrective surgery within a few days and she was able to go home for the first time at three months old.

A year and a half later, her medical team discovered a curve in her spine, known as juvenile scoliosis. From then on, she needed to wear a body brace under her clothes 23 hours a day to prevent it from becoming worse.

At 13, Jessica underwent spinal surgery – having rods permanently inserted into her spine - to prevent further curvature. The procedure also freed her from the brace indefinitely! Ten months later, in spring 2010, she was able to resume her normal activities including hockey, baseball and swimming.

Now entering grade 11, Jessica is starting to think about her future career – maybe as a guidance counselor, an early childhood educator or a chef – she’s still deciding. But for now, she is happy spending time with friends and celebrating her life.

“I think SickKids works miracles,” says Jessica. “If it wasn’t for the Hospital, I wouldn’t be alive today and I am thankful to them for giving me my life.”
