Marlowe, 2, Stroke
Marlowe is a fighter. Shortly after her birth, nurses noticed that she would periodically turn blue, and it became clear that something was wrong. Marlowe’s doctor encouraged her parents, Kari and Declan, to take Marlowe to The Hospital for Sick Children for further testing.
Over the next few weeks, Marlowe’s family gathered by her bedside as doctors ran a number of tests. They determined Marlowe had suffered a stroke, which has caused brain swelling and seizures. The brain damage was permanent and Marlowe would need to spend the next few years of her life recovering.
Marlowe’s family was guided by the strength and expertise of the staff at the Hospital. At 20 months old, Marlowe had hit all of her cognitive benchmarks. She was fitted with a leg orthotic, a hand brace and currently receives regular care with physio and occupational therapy.
Her family is expecting a second child in April 2011. They credit SickKids staff with giving them the confidence to expand their family. As Kari puts it, “We are privileged to have the wonderful health-care professionals at Sick Kids helping us meet and overcome the challenges with our sweet, wonderful daughter. And you should never underestimate the power of encouragement.”
