Our Kids - Meet Nathan

Nathan, 3, Cystic Fibrosis

Nathan, 3, Cystic Fibrosis

Caelyn, 6, is very informed about her 3-year-old brother Nathan’s Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and his care. Shortly after Nathan’s diagnosis two years ago, she educated her babysitter about CF by reading an informational brochure her parents brought home from SickKids. Even at a young age, she understood that CF requires the involvement and support of an entire family – like Nathan’s – to manage.

CF is a degenerative disease that affects Nathan’s lungs and digestive system. Twice a day, one of his parents, Corey or Laura, guides him through an hour of physiotherapy, affectionately referred to as his ‘bump bumps.’ He also consumes enzymes every time he eats.

SickKids is well known for research into CF. In fact, researchers at SickKids discovered the gene responsible for the disease. Nathan’s parents are very optimistic that current studies and research will lead to a breakthrough. They have engaged their community, family and friends to help raise more than $50,000 for CF research.

Nathan’s personality makes it easy to forget about the potential challenges he might face as he grows older. He loves chatting to anyone and everyone – especially when he’s able to make people laugh. He is very imaginative and reminds his parents that he loves them several times a day. The most important thing Nathan has taught Corey and Laura is to live in the moment and appreciate every day they have as a family.
