Our Kids - Meet Sebastien
Sebastien, 4, travelled from Winnipeg to receive lifesaving care only SickKids could provide.
Sebastien
Born prematurely, he suffered from a gastrointestinal condition that left him unable to tolerate food into his intestine. Dependent on intravenous nutrition for survival, his condition continued to deteriorate and he required a rare double transplant of the liver and bowel. When SickKids doctors performed the surgery in 2006, Sebastien became the ninth child to receive the procedure and the third to survive.
His complications continue and, for the time being, his parents have relocated their lives from Winnipeg to Toronto to ensure Sebastien has access to the hospital's expertise in his condition. SickKids has become a home away from home.
Currently, Sebastien remains on dialysis until he can receive a kidney transplant. He and his family remain positive as he continues to beat all odds.
SickKids is the only paediatric hospital in Canada to have a formal multidisciplinary program dedicated to patients like Sebastien with intestinal failure.
