#StopKidsCancerCold: CHILL for SickKids

GUEST BLOG – SickKids kid Tobin

I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour when I was two. I had surgeries, chemo and radiation, but then the cancer came back when I was five. I underwent more surgery and a year and a half of chemo, and when I was nine, the cancer came back again. I had more surgery and more radiation and I took a long time to recover.

When I was 11, I was invited to speak at a new event, The Sears Great Canadian Chill. Participants were going to run into Lake Ontario on New Year’s Day 2011 and raise money for childhood cancer research. I spoke that year and shared my story. I watched all the people run into the freezing cold water, and it seemed like a COOL idea to me. The next year, I decided to be a participant. I wore a superman cape and ran in with my dad. It was unbearably cold and my dad carried me out because the cold hurt my feet.

SickKids kid Tobin jumps in icy water to raise funds for SickKids

"The big reason myself and other people jumped in was because it’s the coolest way to stop kids cancer!"
The following year, in 2013, the event moved to Yonge-Dundas Square and took place on Family Day. Instead of running into icy cold water, Chillers, as the participants are called, jumped into a pool of water. There was a thin layer of ice on the top which had to be cleared off. The big reason myself and other people jumped in was because it’s the coolest way to stop kids cancer! I also jumped in the next year, and volunteered last year.

It’s GREAT that so many CANADIANS are willing and able to CHILL to stop kids cancer cold. It takes a lot of money to do research for different childhood cancers but everyone can do a little and when the efforts are combined, the money makes a big difference. I hope you will donate to support a Chiller this year or be a Chiller yourself.

Looking for something to do this Family Day (February 15)? Consider joining hundreds of participants and brave the cold water at the 6th annual Sears Great Canadian Chill to help #StopKidsCancerCold. The Chill is an Urban Polar Bear Dip that takes place in the heart of the city at Yonge-Dundas Square. The event is in support of research and treatment of childhood cancer at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).Bring your friends and family together and experience the CHILL of a lifetime! Because there’s nothing worse than hearing the words “your child has cancer.” For more information, or to read more stories about inspirational SickKids kids, visit www.TheChill.ca.
