Donations at work
Donor support, which is separate and distinct from government funding and agency grants, is a critical source of funding for SickKids. In recent years, your donations have accounted for about 10 per cent of overall funding support at SickKids.
Your donations make a difference. In 2010-11, with your help, financial support from SickKids Foundation to the Hospital totalled $57.9 million. Here are some of the ways the Hospital benefitted from your generosity:
- $35.7 million for the SickKids Research Institute
- $10.3 million for clinical and research equipment and capital projects
- $5.7 million for training and education for SickKids fellows, professorships, students, bursaries, conference attendance, lectureships, staff recognition and awards
- $4.9 million for other programs throughout the Hospital including art therapy, adolescent medicine, bereavement, cardiac camp, chaplaincy, the eating disorders program, the international patient program, the Reading Room, seizure dog response program, Starlight Room and substance abuse treatment
- $800,000 for Safe Kids Canada, the national injury prevention program at SickKids; AboutKidsHealth, a family resource centre; and other health promotion initiatives
- $500,000 to help SickKids patients and their families with expenses not covered by insurance including parking, an overnight stay or essential drugs
