Dr. Osami Honjo
Interim Head of Cardiovascular Surgery, Co-Medical Director of the Tissue Laboratory, Senior Associate Scientist in Translational Medicine at SickKids, and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto
Dr. Honjo obtained his medical degree at Shimane Medical University and PhD at Okayama University in Japan. He is a diplomat of Japan Surgical Society (general surgery board), and the Japanese Board of Cardiovascular Surgery.
Dr. Osami Honjo became a staff cardiovascular surgeon at SickKids in July 2010 and is the Interim Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery. His clinical practice focuses on open heart surgery in neonates and infants, surgical palliation for single ventricle patients, mechanical cardiopulmonary support in paediatric population, and surgery for patients with adult congenital heart diseases.
Dr. Honjo’s academic interest in basic science focus on the development of mechanical circulatory support for neonates and infants with single ventricle physiology, and the creation of brain protection strategies for neonates and infants who require deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, for which Dr. Honjo obtained 2010 University of Toronto Roscoe Reid Graham Scholarship in Surgical Science.Both Dr. Honjo’s academic interests in clinical research are rooted in the identification of clinical predictors that influences outcome, which improve the quality of surgeons’ decision making.
