$425,000 raised at 2nd Glitter in Macau
More than $425,000 was raised during the second annual BMO Presents Glitter in Macau event held March 6 benefitting The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). In addition to this amount, a generous donation of $200,000 was received from the Poy family and announced during the evening’s proceedings. Due to the family’s long personal connection to the hospital, they have donated this gift to the SickKids Chinese Initiative, which raises funds for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Hundreds of guests gathered at this one-of-a-kind event at the spectacular Arcadian Court for a luxurious evening of casino games, including blackjack, food stations with fine Vegas-style gourmet food and roaming entertainment. Among the performers was 25-year-old Emily Hui, who entertained the crowd, singing ‘Footprints in the Sand’. Emily came to Canada from Hong Kong when she was five years old and shortly thereafter had surgery at SickKids to repair her cleft lip and palate.
The BMO Presents Glitter in Macau event supports a fundraising campaign that partners the Chinese-Canadian community with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at SickKids. The volunteer Chinese Cabinet is led by SickKids Foundation Board members Justin Poy and Frank Luk who were in attendance at the event.
“The members of the Chinese Cabinet were instrumental in making this one-of-a-kind event successful,” said Justin Poy, SickKids Foundation Board Member and Co-Chair, Chinese Cabinet. “This leadership group provides insight on the campaign and helps build connections to strengthen the partnership of the Chinese community and SickKids.”
The Hon. Dr. Vivienne Poy credits SickKids with saving her son, Justin’s life and says this has inspired her family to support the hospital. “During the most challenging years of Justin’s treatment, SickKids became like a second home to us, so I feel grateful to have the opportunity to give back through Glitter in Macau and to support SickKids, which continues to provide world-class care within the Chinese-Canadian community and beyond.”
The Chinese Cabinet and BMO Presents Glitter in Macau event committee worked with a number of corporate sponsors to bring the event to life.“All of our sponsors are deeply invested in the Chinese-Canadian community,” said Frank Luk, SickKids Foundation Board Member and Co-Chair, Chinese Cabinet. “We are grateful for their unwavering commitment to supporting SickKids and this initiative.”
BMO Financial Group was the presenting sponsor for the second consecutive year and has a long-standing affiliation with SickKids.
“BMO values our ongoing relationship with the Chinese community and SickKids,” said Rose Patten, BMO Financial Group. “We were thrilled to continue our support through this fundraising event.”
Additional sponsors included ‘Diamond’ sponsors: TD Bank Financial Group, Cathay Pacific, Fallsview Casino Resort and the Justin Poy Agency; and ‘Jade’ sponsors: LUCKEE by Susur Lee, Burberry, Canada Chinese Computer Association, Toronto Hong Kong Lions Club, Oliver & Bonacini and Grand Catering.
Funds raised at BMO Presents Glitter in Macau support infrastructure, equipment and patient care programs in the SickKids NICU, the referral site for Ontario’s most critically ill newborns. Last year, the SickKids NICU treated 683 patients, including children who often weigh only one pound. Support for the NICU will help offer the most fragile patients the best chance of living long, healthy, and productive lives.
