Former SickKids kid gives back

GUEST BLOG - Christiana Mellway, Events at SickKids Foundation

20-year-old Tiffany was driving to school one morning when she heard a radio commercial for the Canaccord Genuity Great Camp Adventure Walk. She knew instantly that this was a perfect way to give back to the hospital where she had spent much of her childhood.

Born with severe kidney function complications, Tiffany was only six months old when she had her first surgery at SickKids. Her second, at the age of five, removed a portion of her kidney. But that wasn’t the end of her treatment. Visiting the hospital every three months became routine during Tiffany’s childhood. Three days before Tiffany’s 19th birthday, she was formally discharged. As excited as she was, Tiffany wasn’t ready to sever ties with SickKids.

We celebrate our passionate supporters and all those who volunteer their time.
Every year at Christmas and on her birthday Tiffany donates to SickKids, but after hearing the radio commercial, she knew she had the potential to do even more. She immediately went online and registered as Camp Crew. Not only did Tiffany motivate, hydrate, feed and energize our participants at the Rising Star campsite, she also raised a whopping $1,425.

“Sometimes, people can be hesitant to give money to SickKids because they don’t realize how much the hospital relies on donations,” she said. “Educating people on how important their donations are really helps to dispel the myth that the hospital gets enough government funding to continue to provide patient care, programs and research.”

For National Philanthropy Day on November 15, we celebrate our passionate supporters like Tiffany and all those who give or volunteer their time.

Thank you for your commitment to changing the future of kids’ health.
