Ride for Christian

“Daddy, do that,” Christian would exclaim to his father, Roger, as he pointed to the cyclists passing by their car during their drives in rural Vaughan. He would then insist that his father pull the car over so that they could stop and watch the cyclists. Time and again, the cyclists enthralled Christian, and it was this enthusiasm that led Roger to not only take up cycling as a hobby, but to start a charity ride named after his son.

Christian was born on January 6, 2009, and his family physician observed something unique about him. He was referred to a paediatrician and then a specialist in genetics and was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome on March 16, 2010.

Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that is present at birth and occurs at random. It is characterized by several medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays and learning disabilities. These conditions often occur side by side with striking verbal abilities and highly social personalities.

“The birth of Christian has opened my eyes to a new world with novel challenges filled with medical specialists, doctors, therapists and friends,” said Roger. “Although having a child with a disability may be filled with ups and downs, when I see the incredible joy Christian has for life, it makes the struggles worth enduring.”

On Sunday, July 26, Roger will host the second annual RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN. It is a charity ride that will not only raise awareness about Williams Syndrome but also pay tribute to those living with the genetic condition and other chromosomal disorders. Funds raised at the event will support genetic research at SickKids.

"It is a blessing to be engaged in an event that is going to help so many children beyond my son."

"Christian was my sole inspiration to create the RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN,” said Roger. “It is a blessing to be engaged in an event that is going to help so many children beyond my son.”

This year’s ride will feature five events:

  • A 102 km century ride for pro/advanced cyclists
  • A 51 km ride for advanced cyclists
  • A 20 km ride for intermediate cyclists (one hill challenge)
  • A 6 km ride for beginner cyclists
  • A Kids Fun Ride/Family Walk on a track

“The RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN remains my mission to fuel genetic research headed by Dr. Ronald Cohn, Chief of Genetics at The Hospital for Sick Children,” said Roger.

“The children and adults with Williams Syndrome are a very unique group that possess extraordinary gifts, extreme talents and face daunting challenges throughout life. Pedaling for RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN provides an opportunity to improve the lives of this unique group of people. Register, donate, sponsor, pedal … join the challenge! With your support and strength, tomorrow remains a day of sunshine with renewed hope for all children and adults with Williams Syndrome.”
