Meet Amrita: SickKids Lottery ambassador
Amrita was a healthy two-year-old when she woke up one morning with a pain in one arm and then the other. In a matter of days, the pain was so severe throughout her that she was unable to walk, screaming in agony if someone even came near her. Blood tests indicated an auto-immune issue and she was referred to specialists at The Hospital for Sick Children.At SickKids, Amrita’s mom Sonia was comforted to know her daughter would be cared for by the same doctors who treated her when she had her own serious childhood health problems. As the doctors tried to determine what was going on and how to treat the toddler, Sonia recalls that “They were kind and compassionate with us and eager to find out how to help Amrita as quickly as they could.”
Over time, the proper mix of medications and physiotherapy has gone a long way in alleviating her arthritis-like symptoms, allowing her to be the active and happy girl she is now. Despite the testing, hospitalizations and treatments, Amrita is a seven-year-old bundle of fun who loves to sing, read and play. “As soon as she feels even 1 percent better,” says Sonia, “she’s up and about. She is the bravest person I know.”
