#SickKidsMomStrong: Sarah

It was a disease Sarah knew little about. And when her daughter, Jamieson, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, her main concern was what would happen when they left the hospital and how she would take care of her daughter at home. Watching online videos to learn more about cystic fibrosis only increased her fears as she realized how unpredictable the disease was. One minute, someone diagnosed with cystic fibrosis can be fine, but the next, their health can take a turn for the worst due to something as common as a cold.

"The support shown by the clinic gave me the strength to take care of my daughter with confidence."
“The cystic fibrosis clinic at SickKids gave me the confidence that my daughter would be fine; that we would be fine. They took the time to educate me and show me how to care for her at home. The support shown by the clinic gave me the strength to take care of my daughter with confidence. With the unpredictability of the disease, I knew I had to take every step I possibly could to ensure she stayed as healthy as she could.

The cystic fibrosis clinic emphasized that one of the most important elements of treating my daughter’s disease is the therapy she must do each day. Her therapy is an essential part of her care, so I make sure to stay as involved as I can to coach her through it, be her cheerleader and make it enjoyable for her. Even on the days when she seems defeated and just doesn’t want to do it, I am right there by her side encouraging her to keep at it. And when she does experience complications from her cystic fibrosis, I’m right there with her to comfort her until it passes.”
