Cross Canada journey supports Meagan’s Walk and SickKids

On June 2, Nir and Sean will dip the front wheels of their bikes into the Pacific Ocean at Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver and set off on one of the greatest physical challenges they have ever experienced: a cross-Canada cycling trip. Biking an average of 155 km a day, the pair aim to wrap up their journey at the shores of the Atlantic in St. John’s, Newfoundland, during the last week of July.

The venture is named “Bike for Kids” and will support the mission of Meagan’s Walk: raising hope and awareness about paediatric brain tumours, and funds for research at SickKids.

“Crossing Canada has always been on our bucket list,” said Nir. “We thought this would be a great way to celebrate Canada’s 150th while also making an impact.”

The pair said it just made sense to turn their journey into a fundraiser for Meagan’s Walk and SickKids.

The pair said it just made sense to turn their journey into a fundraiser for Meagan’s Walk and SickKids.
“When my father passed away from a brain tumour, my mom wanted to honour him with a donation to SickKids,” said Nir. “We ended up doing so with a donation to the Multi-Sensory Room located in Marnie’s Lounge at SickKids. Through the people we worked with at SickKids to set-up the Multi-Sensory Room donation, we ended up learning about Meagan’s Walk and its mission and vision. We really connected with it and decided it would be a meaningful cause to ride for.”

Although Nir and Sean have been training hard (which includes riding, cross training, weight training and running) leading up to the journey, Sean believes “that nothing will fully prepare us for this challenge. There are so many unknowns: the weather, our health, bike breakdowns. We’re going to be cycling uphill for three hours on mountains. We’ve done hill training, but it won’t compare to what we’ll face out west.”

Both Nir and Sean are marathon runners, so they know the feeling you experience when you’re nearing the end of the run and you hit your empty and you just want to stop, but you also know there is an end in sight and you just have to keep yourself moving in order to get there. They will use those experiences to help get themselves through each day of their ride. “And the thought of a warm bed each night,” said Sean with a laugh.

One of the most unique aspects of Nir and Sean’s journey is that they will be doing the ride self-supported. “We won’t have a team riding with us or following us,” said Nir. “We’ll be carrying all of the major essentials that we need on our bikes.”
