TD employee honoured to give back
Guest blog: Becky, TD employee and SickKids momOn May 29, TD Bank Financial Group kicked off its annual fundraising campaign in support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. It is an initiative that I am so proud to be part of not only as an employee, but as a mom of a little boy who was treated at two different Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals: McMaster Children’s Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
My son, Wyatt, was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD), which meant that he had a hole in his heart. From the moment he was born, he was surrounded by doctors and nurses. He was so fragile that I was unable to actually hold him in my arms for the first time until he was two weeks old. He spent the first three weeks of his life in the NICU at McMaster Children’s Hospital. I remember how worried I was, and how I would cry the moment a doctor would come up to talk to me about Wyatt’s condition.

Wyatt’s surgery took six hours, and when the doctor came out to tell us that everything went great, I just had to give him a big hug. He estimated Wyatt would need to spend about five days in hospital, and then we’d be cleared to go home. It was the best news ever!
Then the fifth day came. And Wyatt crashed.
I wouldn’t wish this amount of pain on any parent. It hurt to look at him and be helpless to do anything for him. But the way the SickKids staff handled the situation … they were all so amazing. And to think they deal with delicate situations like this every day. They truly have such beautiful souls.
We are one family who has been touched by a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (well two hospitals actually), and we couldn’t imagine where we’d be without them. It is why I work so hard to raise funds through our TD campaign, and it is why the campaign is so important to families like mine.
