Walk for SickKids: A Day of Togetherness

Guest blog: Dana, mom to SickKids kid Siena

At 15 years old, Siena is working towards becoming a doctor or nurse so that she can help patients just like all of the staff at The Hospital for Sick Children helped her.

When Siena was just a few weeks old, her paediatrician detected a heart murmur and discovered a hole in her heart. He referred her to a cardiologist at SickKids. Then, at only one month old, Siena developed a mosquito-like bite near her left eye. Dermatologists at SickKids diagnosed this “bite” as a congenital benign tumour. Two procedures were required for Siena.

"It is so much fun to take part in as a family!"
It was during a check-up at SickKids when we first learned about The Canaccord Genuity Great Camp Adventure Walk. After hearing all about it, we knew this would be the perfect way for our family to give back to the very place that gave us so much. SickKids is such a huge part of our lives so we thought participating in The Great Camp Adventure Walk would be a great way to say thanks.

Our first year, we decided to take part as participants in the Walk. But in the second year, we decided that it would be fun to be part of the Crew team and help bring the event to life. This will be our third year as Crew and we are already looking forward to the day.

We have been asked what it is that we love most about The Great Camp Adventure Walk. It is so much fun to take part in as a family! We now have experiences both walking and volunteering and we must say that being a part of the Crew team is one of the best experiences our family has had together.

Camp Messy Hands is our favourite stop along the Walk route! We really enjoyed taking part in it our first year, and now, as Crew, this is the campsite we always volunteer at. We can’t wait to see all the familiar faces come through with such energy and excitement.

One of the best things about The Great Camp Adventure Walk is connecting with other SickKids families. We all have a story and a connection to the hospital. This is our opportunity to meet other families who may have gone through the same thing as us.

We are very excited to see everyone at this year’s #WalkforSickKids on September 23. Please come by and say hi to us at Camp Messy Hands!
