Welcome Merium Iqbal!
Travelling all the way across the world, Merium Iqbal joined the Foundation in 2016 first as a volunteer and now as the Clerk, Receptionist and Office Services. At the age of 3, Merium had moved to Dubai from Pakistan with her younger brother and parents, where she spent most of her childhood. Merium always believed in giving back by volunteering where and when she could, however volunteer opportunities were limited.
While in high school, Merium took part in a campaign called “Seeing is Believing” which hosts a 5K fun run to raise money for blindness and visual impairment. After High school, Merium moved to England to obtain her Bachelors in Psychology at the University of Kent.
“... volunteering is contagious – once you start, you can’t stop!”
During her studies at Kent, Merium was part of the Raise and Give Society at her college, responsible for facilitating fundraising. After graduating she joined the charity ‘Action on Hearing Loss’ and interned for their Community Events and Fundraising team. Her role varied from researching new ways to engage the community with the charity to connecting with participants taking part in sporting events through the summer.
Now at the Foundation, Merium’s first volunteer role was supporting our Granting and Hospital Relations Team with administrative duties, which lead her into an occasional clerk and now a permanent member of the Foundation! During her short tenure, Merium also supported the Foundation by becoming a Team Captain at the Great camp Adventure Walk and most recently and all time-favourite, volunteering at Car Rally allowing Merium to deepen her connection to the cause. Merium ended off by stating that volunteering is contagious – once you start, you can’t stop! Everyone does something to get something in return, not for selfish reasons but that’s just how the world works. Volunteering is one of the few things that results in a win-win for both sides. Merium, thank you for your insight and commitment to SickKids!
