A Letter from Owen's Family

Dear Friends,

On January 19, 2014 Owen was diagnosed with leukemia. We knew Owen was fighting an uphill battle. He relapsed four times and his leukemia grew more complex. Throughout his fight the care he received at SickKids was incredible.

Owen passed away on September 12th, 2018. He was 14 years old. We miss him terribly. We honour his memory by continuing to live as Owen did—with a brave, resilient and positive spirit.

We will always be grateful for the support our family received from SickKids. To honour Owen, we are taking on the challenge of raising $1 million for SickKids in support of leukemia research and to help build a new hospital. In the spirit of Owen, please join Josh, Peter and me as we set out to reach our goal and help other children fighting unimaginable battles. Thank you for your support.

We need a building that lifts—not limits—our level of care

THE CHALLENGE

When SickKids was built on the current site nearly 70 years ago, it was a state-of-the-art hospital reflecting the latest medical practices and technologies. Today, parts of the hospital don’t even meet modern building codes.

WHY SICKKIDS

The Garron Family Cancer Centre at SickKids is one of the top paediatric cancer research programs in the world. Right now, for example, SickKids researchers and clinician scientists are working hard to generate a clearer understanding of the mechanisms underlying leukemia and testing the impact and long-term outcomes of current and innovative therapies.

OUR VISION

Build a new SickKids that will revolutionize collaborative discovery and compassionate care in the name of better outcomes for patients and their families.

YOUR IMPACT

An investment to help raise $1 million for Owen’s Fund help build a new SickKids that will house the most ground-breaking paediatric cancer centre this country has ever seen.

RECOGNITION

SickKids will honour your collective gift with the naming of the Owen Weinstein Nursing Station in the bone marrow transplants and cellular therapies unit.

THANK YOU

Thank you for considering a gift to Owen’s Fund to help SickKids overcome decades-long hindrances so that we can continue conducting superior medical care and cancer research. Your gift will not only help raise a new SickKids, but, in the most palpable way possible, elevate paediatric health-care in this province for the millions of patients and families who rely on SickKids.
