International Volunteer Day: Meet Joanne

GUEST BLOG - Christiana Mellway, Events at SickKids Foundation

34-year old Joanne Fraraccio has spent more than half of her life volunteering.

It all began when Joanne was 15 and learned about an opportunity to volunteer after school at her favourite place – the public library. She relished the experience, the increasing responsibility, and was thrilled when one year later she was offered a part-time job.

“When I started volunteering, I didn’t realize that I was gaining valuable skills, but those skills have translated to skills which are applicable in the workplace,” Joanne said. “Volunteering continues to teach me new things, which increases my knowledge and confidence.”

Joanne’s passion for volunteerism has only intensified since that initial experience. She realizes how much she has personally gained from her volunteerism, but her drive to volunteer comes predominantly out of a desire to make a difference. She understands that donating even a little bit of time can make a big impact.

“Volunteering is engrained in me,” she said. “So many organizations need help and volunteering not only allows me to explore my passions, but also to utilize my skills to give back to the community.”

Joanne continues to volunteer for a number of organizations, including Canadian Blood Services, The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, The Ride to Conquer Cancer, CrossFit Canada, the CIBC Run for the Cure and SickKids Foundation.

"Volunteering is engrained in me"

In her role as Road Lead for the Canaccord Genuity Great Camp Adventure Walk to benefit SickKids Foundation, Joanne oversees and supports the Road Crew teams, who keep participants safe while they’re out on the route.

“I love volunteering for The Great Camp Adventure Walk because it’s such a unique event,” she said. “I think it’s great that it is open to everyone, including children and patients. You can see the impact it has on the patient families and that is incredibly special.”

Thank you to Joanne, and all of the amazing volunteers who work to make a difference in our community. Your dedication and commitment is truly inspiring.
