Math, reading and writing milestones – Learning resources from AboutKidsHealth

AboutKidsHealth has learning resources for you to help your children develop early math, reading and writing skills and to learn about the skills expected of children at different stages of development.

Note that these are general guides. If you have concerns about your child’s learning development, please speak with their teacher.

Mathematics milestones
Mathematics milestones teaches that math is more than just numbers. This resource outlines the skills children are expected to develop at different stages from kindergarten (e.g., understanding location/position terms, such as ‘inside’ and ‘outside’, ‘behind’ and ‘next to’) to Grade 5 (e.g., estimating sums in word problems, calculating probability). You can also find some general tips for supporting your child’s learning and information to help you understand the importance of mastering early math skills.

Reading milestones
Reading milestones outlines the types of reading skills children typically develop by the end of senior kindergarten (SK) (e.g., identifying most letters of the alphabet, breaking up and sounding out simple words) up to the end of Grade 3 (e.g., reading aloud clearly and with expression, predicting events in a story). The page also includes tips for playing and reading with your child to help develop skills necessary for reading and other general tips.

Writing milestones
Writing milestones describes the typical writing achievements for children from the end of SK to the end of Grade 3 in two broad categories:

  1. The mechanics of writing (making the shapes of letters)
  2. Written expression (communicating ideas)

In this resource, you will find a list of specific skills in both categories for each grade level, as well as ways to help your child develop skills necessary for writing, such as playing with symbols and reading to your child daily. Also included is a list of fun writing activities in which you and your child can engage together.
