Our family's life with allergy

Jyoti and Peter are the parents of three children, Sahil, Anika and Jaya. Sahil and Jaya have severe anaphylactic food allergies. Since their diagnoses, the family has spent every waking moment working to ensure they avoid contact with their allergens.

The SickKids Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Program is determined to change the future for families affected by food allergy, so that they no longer live with the fear of life-threatening reactions.  The goal of our world class immunology and allergy experts is to prevent and ultimately cure food allergy in 10 years.

We are grateful to SickKids for making the fight against food allergies a priority.

Food allergies affect 1 in 13 people in Canada and that rate is increasing.  More importantly a food allergy in the family does not only affect that individual, it also affects their family, friends, school and community. A cure would mean freedom for all children with food allergies and their families.

For Jyoti and Peter, knowing that SickKids has pledged to cure life threatening food allergies gives them hope for the future.  They see SickKids as a leader in paediatric medicine and the family is grateful that SickKids recognizes the affect food allergies have on the quality of life of a food allergic individuals, their family and friends.

Jyoti and Peter founded the annual Walk for Andrea, a fundraising event in memory of Andrea Mariano who died from an anaphylactic reaction. Their goal is to raise $35,000 for SickKids and they’ve raised $17,000 to date. To find out more about this event, click here.
